Apple has launched a repair program that will enable some users to get their MacBook Pro laptops fixed for free. The MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues program is a response to problems faced by some users of MacBook Pro laptops sold between February 2011 and December 2013.

The MacBook Pro repair program begins from February 20 in the US and Canada, and will extend to other countries from February 27. Affected MacBook Pro owners can either visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider with their machines, or mail them in. Users are recommended to back up their laptops before initiating the repair process.

Apple says on the program page that the affected MacBook Pro laptops may display symptoms such as distorted or scrambled video, no video on the display (or even external display), and unexpected restarts.

The Cupertino giant notes that laptops affected with these issues are the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models manufactured in 2011, and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina models manufactured from mid-2012 to early-2013. Users can check if their laptop is eligible for the free repair by entering their hardware serial number on the dedicated service and support coverage page.

Apple says it has begun contacting affected MacBook Pro customers who previously paid for a repair either though Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and will arrange a reimbursement for them. Users who have not been contacted but feel they paid for a repair they think was due to the same issue can contact Apple.

Apple says the free MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues program will be valid until February 27 2016, or three years from the original date of sale of the laptop, adding "whichever provides longer coverage" for users.
